St Joseph's Mission

We aim to provide a place where those in need can receive practical assistance and support in an atmosphere of care, dignity and respect.

Aim of the Mission

We aim to provide a place where those in need can receive practical assistance and support in an atmosphere of care, dignity and respect.

Work of the Mission

  • a drop-in centre 4 hours per week with tea, coffee, bread and a chat
  • distribution of food parcels for individuals and families
  • advocacy services
  • referral services

Location

St Joseph's Mission is located at St Joseph's Hall, Rouse Street, Port Melbourne and is open from 10.00am to 12.00noon on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Volunteers

We have a group of eight people who are involved in a variety of tasks associated with the Mission. Four provide ‘hands-on’ assistance and the others provide back up services. Tom Burns manages the day-today operation of the Mission.

Volunteers need a Police Records Check and a Working With Children Check. Application forms and advice are available from the Parish Office (9681 9600).

Costs

Initial set-up costs and overheads have been met by the Parish (small fridge, tables, chairs, telephone, electricity & water) and partly funded by donations of parishioners and local business. Food parcels are provided by the direct donation of food by parishioners of both parishes and people in the local area, and supplemented by purchases. Average cost per week - $300.00.

Local Support

Several local businesses provide support to the Mission. We acknowledge the support of The Melbourne Bakehouse, the Bay Hotel and the Paint & Wallpaper Centre.
